STUDENTS from Islwyn High School managed to secure £1,500 as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate Mini Challenge this week.

Year 9 pupils from the Caerphilly school took part in the challenge and independently contacted their chosen charity. The groups then researched their charity to learn about them before presenting a sales pitch.

Six groups made it to the final on Wednesday where they were judged by a panel including Caerphilly Council representatives, officers from the Welsh Baccalaureate and school council representatives.

The winners of the final were Thomas Morris, Jack Hayes, Gareth Donovan and Darian Lawrence who chose Children’s Cancer charity LATCH and won £1,000. The group chose the charity as Thomas battled cancer and received support from LATCH.

The two runners up received £250 for their pitches and head teacher Tim Williams also gave a £50 donation to each team.
