PENDYRUS Male Choir is to perform an open-air concert at St Dogmaels Abbey.
The choir is well known throughout Wales and, indeed, across many countries as it is probably the most widely travelled of male choirs. Since 1965, they have travelled abroad more than 30 times.
Based in the Rhondda Valley, they have been performing since 1924, and currently perform some 25 times a year. The combined sound of 80-plus male voices produces a powerful sound like no other, and the choir has recently been commended for being active in attracting young members to join its ranks.
Stewart Roberts, the musical director who spent part of his younger years in Dinas Cross, is an accomplished musician in his own right, both as a cellist and pianist.
The choir returns to St Dogmaels four years after they performed at the abbey. The atmosphere of the abbey ruins provides a superb backdrop to the music of the choir.
It is being organised by Abaty900, a society that promotes the abbey as a venue and as a historical place to visit.
People are encouraged to bring a picnic and to enjoy an al fresco afternoon. Should the weather decide to be difficult, the choir will perform in St Thomas’ Church.
