A RECYCLING centre in Usk will be getting a makeover to improve safety for visitors, residents and site staff.

Monmouthshire County Council will build a fence and gate at the entrance to its household waste recycling centre (HWRC), adjacent to the town’s Maryport Street car park.

This will be done to ensure that operations involving the use of skips are kept separate from the public.

In addition, dedicated parking will be made available for visitors.

The work follows a study by contractors Viridor which indicated that the measures currently in place carry “a real risk” of accidental damage.

A further move will involve setting up a dedicated route within the car park for HGVs leaving the site in order to prevent the vehicles from getting stuck in narrow spaces, or hitting pedestrians and parked cars.

The council;’s recycling and waste team will publicise the changes within the car park and via social media, with work scheduled to start on Monday, July 3.

Councillor Bryan Jones, cabinet member with responsibility for recycling and waste, said: “The protection of the public is of utmost importance to us so we are taking steps to remove any hazards.

“Usk’s HWRC is a very popular amenity bringing lots of visitors into town and these improvements will ensure that it can continue to operate safely for the future.”
