A JEALOUS man was jailed by a judge after “kicking a door off its hinges” and threatening a woman with who he had an “on-off” relationship, while armed with a kitchen knife.

Christian Wall, of Medway Road, Newport, appeared in Newport Crown Court, charged with affray, following the incident in Risca on May 11 this year.

Tony Trigg, prosecuting, said victim Racheal Whitfield was in her home when she heard an “almighty bang”, followed by Wall “flying in” with “fists clenched” and shouting.

After returning from the kitchen with a knife, he pinned her against the wall, pointing the knife downwards close to her head, the court heard.

When the victim called 999, 27-year-old Wall was reported as saying “you’re dead” before leaving. The victim also suffered a fractured finger.

A victim impact statement said that Miss Whitfield had an on-off relationship with Wall, but felt “trapped” due to his “controlling” behaviour.

This included repeatedly phoning her – with 60 calls in one day.

The statement said: “I have been an emotional wreck and I feel myself looking over my shoulder. I feel scared and alone and I want to hide and pretend this never happened.”

Defence counsel, Ben Waters, said that Wall admitted he had feelings of “jealousy” and saw the relationship as more than “on-off”, thinking there was “infidelity” involved.

He added that his client pleaded guilty to the offence, and “bitterly regretted it”.

Wall was sentenced to 10 months in prison, and ordered to pay a surcharge of £130.

Recorder Lucy Crowther also imposed a restraining order banning Wall from contacting Ms Whitfield.
