POLICE are appealing for information after an arson on a Newport railway line caused £10,000 damage.

At around 8.45pm on Friday July 7, Network Rail staff noticed a fire that had spread onto the railway from the Lliswerry Ponds area.

The blaze spread to lineside equipment boxes causing extensive damage to cabling which has cost over £10,000 in repairs.

British Transport Police are looking to speak to anyone who was in the area on the evening of July 7 who may have information about the fire.

A spokesman said: "Lliswerry Ponds is a popular area for fishing and picnics, so there may well have been people nearby who saw something out of the ordinary which could be linked to the fire".
