CALLS for an independent inquiry into the handling of the scrapped Circuit of Wales project has been thrown out.

Plaid Cymru and other groups have called for an inquiry after the £425 million project in Ebbw Vale was thrown out last month.

But, in a letter to Plaid leader Leanne Wood dated Tuesday, July 18, first minister Carwyn Jones said: "An independent inquiry is neither appropriate nor necessary.

"This is a private sector project where the developers have failed to meet the key benchmark publicly set by the Welsh Government as a pre-condition of our support.

"Specifically the extensive and detailed due diligence undertaken by external experts has shown that due to the way that the deal is structured the proposal would see Welsh Government exposed to more than 50 per cent of the risk."

Senior Plaid AM Adam Price said the Welsh Government’s handling of the project had been "disastrous".

"The independent inquiry is necessary to get to the bottom of what has happened," he said. "This needs to be properly investigated."
