A CONSTULATION has been launched on plans by the Welsh Government to introduce a scheme offering discounts on business rates to small firms in Wales from next year.

Small businesses in Wales are already being offered £110 million in the current financial year, with plans to set up a permanent scheme.

The permanent scheme could involve redirecting business relief from larger chains with lots of small branches to other small firms which may benefit more.

It could also make relief more generous for businesses such as local shops, pubs or cafes.

The consultation is also looking into whether some types of business should be excluded from the scheme.

Wales' finance secretary Mark Drakeford said: "We want to provide as much certainty and security for small businesses as we possibly can.

"One of the best ways we can do this is by confirming that we will be introducing a £110 million permanent small business rate relief scheme in 2018 and, in doing so, extending a tax cut that will help boost long-term economic growth for Wales."

The consultation will close on Friday, October 13.
