A YOUNG mum has spoken of her distress following a raid on her home - in which her father’s ashes were taken.

The 20-year-old, who has asked not to be named, said a Playstation and around £200 worth of first edition bank notes were also stolen, but the theft of her father’s ashes had left her speechless.

The resident of Nash Road - where the burglary took place - said: “Who would want to steal somebody’s ashes?

“We were on holiday in Corfu and we received a phone call from my friend saying that our house had been broken into.”

She said the ashes had been removed from a clear, plastic bag, clearly marked with what was inside.

“They took lots of things, like the Playstation and about £200 worth of AA £5 notes that we had collected,” she added. “The notes are worth a lot because they’re all first editions.

“The house had been left an absolute mess. You could see that they had even been through all of the kitchen draws searching for things.

“But I can’t believe they took my dad’s ashes from upstairs in my bedroom.

“He died a few years ago and we were just about ready to have the ashes interred.

“We hadn’t before because we just haven’t had the time.”

She has now pleaded for their safe return.

“I don’t care if someone just puts it through the letterbox, to be honest,” she said. “I just want them back. You can’t imagine how much upset this has caused.”

A spokeswoman from Gwent Police confirmed the details of the burglary.

She said: “At approximately 4.05pm on Sunday July 16 we received reports of a burglary at a house on Nash Road, Newport.

“The offenders gained access to the property by smashing the glass of the rear patio doors.”

She added: “Anyone with any information is asked to call 101 quoting log number 366 16/7/17.”
