A NEWPORT poultry farmer has been announced as NFU Cymru's Woman Farmer of the Year at the Royal Welsh Show.

Victoria Shervington-Jones scooped the award which looks to celebrate the contribution that women make to the agricultural industry and to raise the profile of women in farming.

The award, which is in its 21st year, was delivered in conjunction with Principality Building Society Wales.

Mrs Shervington-Jones, of St Brides, runs the free range egg business Country Fresh Eggs with her family, and has two children aged three and four.

The firm consists of 39,500 layers, a packing plant and two delivery vans, allowing the business to supply deliveries as far west as Cowbridge and north to Abergavenny.

Mrs Shervington-Jones also visits schools and attends events to talk to members of the public about free range egg production.

She also volunteers with Open Farm Sunday at a local farm, while also assisting Maendy YFC with various events.

John Davies, NFU Cymru Deputy President, hailed Mrs Shervington-Jones as a "fantastic role model for women in farming and puts 110% into everything she does."

He added: “It is clear that Victoria is continually thinking of ways to improve her business to make it sustainable long into the future."

Along with the prestigious title, Mrs Shervington-Jones received a Welsh crystall glass engraved fruit bowl and £500 prize money.
