THE speed limit along a stretch of the A48 near Chepstow could be reduced to 30mph.
A public consultation is planned for residents living in Pwllmeyric after Monmouthshire County Council and Gwent Police recommended the changes.
Police are also intending to monitor the road to see if further steps may need to be taken to ensure motorists observe the limit.
If the measures are agreed, it could be rolled out during the autumn.
Councillor Bryan Jones, cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said there had been “longstanding issues” with speeding and road safety in the village.
“The new order for a 30mph limit is intended to be introduced with only minimal changes to signage to meet legal requirements,” he added.
A council group is currently examining how best to tackle road safety concerns in the county.
It will present a final report and recommendations to the cabinet member for consideration later this year.Pwllmeyric residents interested in joining a community speed watch group should ring the council on 01633 644644 or email: highways@monmouthshire.gov.uk
