A PLAQUE has been unveiled to commemorate the successful restoration of part of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

Members of the public, politicians and canal volunteers met at the Ty Coch section of the canal for the special plaque unveiling ceremony. The project - a partnership between Torfaen County Borough Council and Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust (MBACT) - was launched in 2012 to restore the canal.

“We’ve managed to restore 1.5 kilometres of the canal,” said Heidi Carey, who managed the waterworks project.

“We have restored seven locks on the canal. We’ve done this by cleaning the walls etc.

“We’re hoping to now extend the work to Pontnewydd.”

Nick Thomas-Symonds Torfaen MP said: “Today is something we can be very proud of.

“Industrial history is important and I can see a lot of effort has gone into this project.”

Chairman of MBACT Roger Francis added: “I’d like to thank everyone who has helped.“This is a big achievement.”
