A GWENT Police officer, who attended the street where a Polish man was found unconscious in Newport, has told a jury that she found him half-naked.

PC Lesley Morgan gave evidence at Newport Crown Court yesterday in relation to the alleged murder of Jan Jedrzejewski in Keene Street.

Richard Wallis, aged 43, of Keene Street, Callum Banton, aged 18, of Fleetwood Close, and a 17-year-old youth, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, have pleaded not guilty to his murder.

Shaquille Crosdale, aged 18, of Fleetwood Close, has pleaded not guilty to the same offence and also to perverting the course of public justice.

A fifth defendant, Catherine Coslett, aged 64, of Valley View Road, Cwmtillery, is accused of perverting the course of public justice.

James Wilson, prosecuting, said: “The report you received was that there was a man lying in the road half-naked.”

PC Morgan said: “He was lying in his side in between two parked cars.

“I could see his trousers were down by his ankles. He had a top on but he was missing his underpants.

“There was blood on his head area.

“He was unconscious. We tried to resuscitate him. His lips were blue.”

Edward Burgess, defending the 17-year-old youth, asked the police officer about the notes in her e-notebook, which is similar to an iPad.

He said: “The missing underpants – is that contained in your notebook?”

PC Morgan responded: “He had no underpants on.”

Mr Burgess said: “The trousers were down by his ankles – where they that far down? Where they down by his thighs?”

PC Morgan replied: “They were still on his legs but they were scrunched down.”

He also asked the officer whether, when she wrote in her notebook, she was with her colleague who she attended the scene with, to which she replied no.

Mr Wilson also read a number of witness statements to the court.

Reading a statement from Elizabeth Price, he said: “I was at home locking my front after taking the red bin out for collection.

“A male and female were shouting at each other – the male was outside and shouting and the female was in the middle of the road.

“I saw three children standing near the female.”

He also read an account from Sarah Jane Warrington: “I heard arguing in the street. I saw some people running up the street in the opposite direction to the Cromwell Stores.”

Mr Wilson added that the witness heard “a very loud bang” which “sounded like a sheet of metal”.

He also read a statement from Vicky Davies: “I saw a few boys wearing black, approximately four of them,

“The male was mixed race, around 17 or 18. I saw a boy riding off on a bike – about 17 or 18 years old.

“I saw a man lying on the floor. I saw lots of blood coming from his head.”

Mr Wilson added that the witness saw “paramedics working on him for around 30 minutes, trying to resuscitate him” but she thought the man was dead.

Mr Jedrzejewski died at the Royal Gwent Hospital the day after the alleged incident, as he was found unresponsive at around 11pm close to Cromwell Road on Thursday, January 12. Proceeding.
