FOOD businesses across Gwent are celebrating after their products were awarded stars for excellence by the Great Taste Awards.

Following more than 60 days of judging, the food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers has published a list of the “most desirable” products in the country.

From a record breaking 12,336 products judged, 4,347 were awarded a Great Taste accolade - with 13 winners in Gwent.

Jayne Curtis, of Jayne's Bakes in Newport, was honoured with a star for her dark chocolate brownies.

She said: “Obviously I am absolutely over the moon.

“The competition is quite tough so to get an award is fantastic.

“When I entered the competition I didn’t actually think I would win but when I found out I couldn’t believe it.”

Another winner, Anne Baker, who is the owner of Miss Daisy’s Kitchen in Blaenau Gwent, said she was “humbled” after being given three stars.

The 39-year-old said: “I’m delighted and humbled by the award.

“Miss Daisy’s Kitchen is a small family business involving myself and my husband Matt, and it is only three-years-old, both working around full time jobs.

“This was our first entry into the Great Taste Awards and to win the coveted three stars for our Mummy’s Carrotop Chutney is a huge honour.”

Shee added: “Hopefully this is the start of bigger things for Miss Daisy’s Kitchen.

“And thank you to everyone who has supported us - we appreciate it.”

Another Gwent business to win was White Castle Vineyard, based near Abergavenny in Monmouthshire, for its red wine. Owner Robb Merchant said: “We are dead chuffed, it’s the first time we have entered and we are very chuffed to get an award for our red wine – especially as its made here in the UK.

“We are proud to be here in Monmouthshire and we are proud to produce wine in Monmouthshire.”
