JOB losses could be on the cards at a Newport homeware store, it has been revealed.

Wilko has confirmed it is "entering into consultation" with staff at a number of stores, including the branch in the Kingsway Shopping Centre.

But it has not confirmed how many jobs could be lost as a result of the move.

A statement from the high street chain said this was part of its plans to introduce "a new simplified retail team structure".

Retail director Anthony Houghton said: “Wilko is committed to the future growth of the business and reviewing how we stay relevant to our customers in Newport.

"We do this by making sure all retail operations are fit for the future in order to provide customers with the best possible service."

But he added efforts to cut costs has "not translated into positive results".

"The simpler newly defined store structure will give teams greater variety within their roles and result in more team hours on the shop floor, delivering a better customer experience," he said.

“As a family run business, we care greatly about team members in Newport and know that change is never easy.

"We are working with our recognised trade union the GMB, listening to team members and offering support at all levels.

"We are entering into a long period of consultation and wherever possible are aiming to redeploy team members into new roles and offering help and support to those seeking new opportunities.

“These changes are vital to ensure that we are more efficient as a business and so can continue to serve our customers in Newport for many years to come."
