A MAN had to be rescued by emergency services after he fell off Newport footbridge into the River Usk this morning.

Police, fire and ambulance services all attended, along with the coastguard from Chepstow, having been alerted shortly before 8.30am.

The man was rescued from the river shortly before 9am, and was taken to The Royal Gwent Hospital.

Former editor of the Argus, Kevin Ward, said: "I could hear screams at about 8.10am so I went outside to look.

"I called 999 when I saw the man.

"He managed to get onto the mud banks and the emergency services got him to safety."

Adam Conor, 25, who was walking on Millennium Walk, said: "I didn't actually see him fall in but I saw the emergency services come and get him out".
