TORFAEN residents are being urged to avoid burning plastic on garden bonfires and to instead use the recycling options.

People are able to recycle most domestic plastics at the kerbside, while harder plastics – including plant pots and toys – can be recycled at the household waste recycling centre.

People have been warned that nuisance smoke from garden bonfires can contain carbon monoxide. This can result in enforcement action being taken under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Cllr Fiona Cross, who is executive member for the environment, said: “During the summer months we get increased calls about people burning plastic in their gardens. Not only is this bad for the environment, it is certain to be a nuisance for neighbours too.

“There is really no excuse for this as almost all plastics can be recycled free of charge in Torfaen.

“We all want to enjoy the little that is left of the summer, so please consider your neighbours and recycle your plastics instead.”

Nuisance fires can be reported to the council by caling 01633 647622.
