NEWPORT is getting into the festival spirit as it gears up to the annual Pill Carnival - which is taking place in a week’s time on Bank Holiday Monday, August 28.

The parade will start at 1pm from the bottom of Alexandra Road and then continue into Commercial Road before heading to Cardiff Road and finishing in Mendalgief Road.

This year’s Pill Carnival Queen, 14-year-old Angel Paul, will also be present. Attendants Connie Sefton, 14, and Caitlin Brockway, 16, will be accompanied by six flower girls and six court ladies.

Mrs Barton said: “There will be a prize for the best float, as well as for walking entries. We just want to keep the carnival alive and we can’t do it unless we have the backing of the people.”

After the parade celebrations will continue on the fields by the Pill Mill centre, where there will be live music and DJs, a fun fair, food from all over the world, bouncy castles, dancing, face painting and lots more. Wrestling and a tug of war competition will also take place.

“It is not too late to join the tug of war competition - we need teams of eight,” said Mrs Barton.

The tug of war competition is in memory of Sean Healey who died in July 2015 and was known for dedicating his time to Pill Carnival each year.
