A COUNCIL sports scheme is going “from strength to strength” according to organisers following its launch last year.

More than 130 youngsters take part in the Monmouthshire Games each day across the county’s four leisure centres, with around 6,200 people taking part since its summer launch in 2016.

Among the 40 sports offered are swimming, football, netball, basketball, cricket, hockey, rugby, golf, rounders and tennis.

Fully-trained staff supervise proceedings assisted by volunteers - often physical education students seeking experience.

Councillors Bob Greenland and Maureen Powell recently attended a session in Abergavenny to see for themselves the value of the Monmouthshire Games.

“The Monmouthshire Games is a very important programme for the county as it not only delivers activity for children but also helps in the development of education and life skills,” said Cllr Greenland.

Cllr Powell added: “I’m very proud that our leisure centres provide this wonderful service, not only in the summer but also during all school holidays.”

The current sessions run until Friday August 25 but further games are scheduled for October’s half-term and the Christmas holidays.
