A WOMAN whose father has been told he only has months to live has launched an appeal to give her parents the honeymoon they never had.
Kelly Medhurst, of Elm Court, Newbridge, has launched a fundraising appeal to help her parents Les and Carol Burt enjoy one last family holiday.
Mr Burt, 70, was diagnosed with lung cancer last year and received treatment and radiotherapy at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.
He was given the all clear, but early this year doctors discovered he had cancer in his breast tissue. After a course of chemotherapy and a scan, it became clear the cancer had come back on his lungs, and now it may have spread to his bone marrow.
The ex-army soldier, coach driver and plumber is currently receiving intensive chemotherapy and is in hospital with pneumonia and septicaemia.
“Doctors have told my dad it looks like he has six to eight months to live,” said Mrs Medhurst, 31, a mother-of-three.
“We don’t know exactly how long we have got so we want to book the holiday as soon as possible. It would give my mum something special to have memories about.”
The couple, who have been married 37 years, want to go to St Ives in Cornwall with Mrs Medhurst, her husband and three sons to make it one last family holiday.
After their wedding, they were unable to take a honeymoon due to the cost. They have spoken about taking a honeymoon holiday several times, but have never been able to fulfill their desire.
Donations have poured in from across the community since the JustGiving page was set up two weeks ago, raising £1,320.
Mrs Medhurst said she is hoping people will help her dad as he has helped others.
“He is the type of person who would drop everything to help anyone,” she said.
“He has always helped everyone even if he has had to go without something so someone else can have it. When he was ill with cancer he still tried to help an elderly lady in a wheelchair by doing the patio in her garden and by doing the shopping for her.”
Messages of support have also been written on the JustGiving page. One said: “You’re a fabulous person and deserves this holiday at least. You have helped so many people.”
