A COMMEMORATIVE bench has been unveiled at Cwmbran’s Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre in honour of a former committee member and Torfaen councillor.

Marlene Thomas died in January 2016 aged 82, having previously represented the Croesyceiliog ward during her tenure with Torfaen council.

She was a huge supporter of the arts as displayed in her role within the arts centre, which celebrated its 50th birthday last year.

The former lawyer, she devoted parts of her political career to improve representation of woman in politics at both a local and national level.

On Wednesday, August 23, the bench, commissioned by the Torfaen Labour Women’s Forum and made by Cwmbran Woodcraft with wood sourced from Blaen Bran Community Woodland, was officially unveiled.

Cllr Kelly Preston, a member of the Torfaen Women’s Forum, said: “Without the work carried out by strong women like former councillor Marlene Thomas, it would be so much harder for women like me to enter public life.”

Cllr Many Owen said: “The bench is a mark of respect and a way in which to remember all Marlene did to further women’s rights.”

In addition to her role with Torfaen council, Mrs Thomas also sat as a member of its forbearer - Gwent County Council.

Hwyel Pontin, the director of the Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre, said: “Marlene saw that art could have a hugely positive impact on the community here in Torfaen.

“She believed that people in Torfaen shouldn’t have to travel to places like London to see the very best art, but that the best art could be brought here for people to enjoy.

“She was particularly passionate about showcasing the work of young artists and part of her legacy is that we are currently displaying work from two artists that are recognised by the Arts Council as ones to watch.”

Originally from the Swansea area and a former Aberystwyth University student, Mrs Thomas settled in Croesyceiliog during the sixties, where she lived until her death.

The leader of Torfaen council, cllr Anthony Hunt, said: “Marlene was an inspiration to many and I am delighted to be able to share in this celebration of her role in the community, and in arts in particular.”
