ANOTHER case of measles has been confirmed in the outbreak affecting Newport and Torfaen, taking the total number of people hit by the disease since June to 17.

The cases are being linked to a large outbreak in Europe, which has affected more than 14,000 people, 40 of whom have died.

With schools going back next week, parents are being reminded to make sure their children are vaccinated, especially if they have recently been to Europe.

Public Health Wales' Dr Rhianwen Stiff said: "We have a real concern that, as people return to Wales after the summer holidays, they may bring back measles with them, and we may see further outbreaks of this highly contagious infection across Wales."

A vaccination programme has seen 1,089 children in Newport receiving vaccination since the outbreak began.

Parents who suspect their child has measles should contact their GP or NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47.
