MAJOR road closures will be in place on a Gwent road this weekend so work can be carried out to improve safety.

The A465 between Brynmawr and Gilwern is to be closed from Friday to Monday. An official diversion will be in place.

The closure will involve the Brynmawr roundabout where the A467 from Abertillery, Blaina and Brynmawr, and the A4047 from Brynmawr town, joins the A465 Heads of the Valleys trunk road in the west, to the Glanbaiden roundabout in the East where the A465 meets the A4077 Abergavenny Road and the B4246.

The closures will take place from 8.30pm on Friday to 6am on Monday.

The closures are part of work to convert 8km of the A465 into two lanes in each direction.

The aim of the scheme is to upgrade the existing three lane carriageway to a dual carriageway to improve safety to restrict traffic flow and opportunities for safe overtaking.

The range of works scheduled to take place will include the installation of the temporary support for a bridge, where a crane will be positioned on the existing carriageway covering both lanes.

Earthworks will also be done adjacent to the Dan y Coed roundabout where the machine required will be positioned on the carriageway.
