THE DECISION to name a road in a Cwmbran housing development after a soldier from the town who was killed in Afghanistan is, in our view, a fitting tribute.

Private James Prosser, a former Llantarnam Comprehensive School pupil, was killed in 2009 while serving in Afghanistan after joining the army aged 20. There had been a plaque in his memory at his former school.

When it was decided that the school was to be demolished and the land sold for housing it was understandably a difficult time for his family, who decided against the plaque being moved to the newly created Cwmbran High School.

Instead, the family, Torfaen Council and Barratt Homes liaised on a proposal to name the development at his former school site in the young man’s memory.

So one of the first roads at the St Michael’s Gate development will become James Prosser Way.

This is a good move by the council and the developer and, as Pte Prosser’s mum Sarah Adams has said, something which all boroughs and towns could, and should, be doing.

In our view, all parties involved in this whole process are to be commended for making this happen.
