Appeal to ensure supporters of Newport Transporter Bridge can go to meeting on World Heritage Status

Members of the International Congress of Transporter Bridges are set to meet in Argentina this month to draft a rough application to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), on behalf of seven of the world’s eight remaining transporter bridges – including the one in Newport.

One bridge, in Bilbao, Spain, already has World Heritage Site status.

But to make their case, the members of FONTB need to raise £1,500 to cover accommodation, flights and transportation. 

David Hando, chairman of the group, said an appeal has now been launched to make sure the Newport site “will be represented”, and fulfill the long-held dream of securing heritage site status.

He said: “We’re trying to raise the money to get us there. 

“Then we can discuss and represent Newport Transporter Bridge at the meeting on September 27 and 28.

“I hope people are able to donate.”

The 79-year-old, who lives in of Pwll Pen Court, Newport, called the upcoming meeting “vital” to attend.

“The meeting will discuss a few things, including all the bridges and a rough application,” said Mr Hando.

“We have got to be there for Newport Transporter Bridge.

“It’s an important meeting because I know people representing French, German and Spanish bridges are going to be there to present their case. 
“This is why the meeting is vital.”

Mr Hando also said he believes that gaining World Heritage Site status for the bridge would ensure a “tourism boom” for the city.

“Can you imagine the number of people coming here to see the bridge?” he added.

“It would do wonders for the city.

“It would also ensure that the bridge is protected for many more years to come.”

A total of 981 other sites have World Heritage Site status across the globe.
