Storm Aileen is the first storm to be named since this season’s names were released last week, as part of the scheme by the Met Office and Met Eireann to raise awareness of extreme weather in the UK and Ireland.

The Met Office’s chief forecaster assessment states the strongest winds are expected at around midnight and will move quickly Eastwards.

Gusts of 70-75mph are most likely over hills and Western coasts but gusts of 60-70mph are still expected further east.

Weather warnings are issued by the Met Office to warn the public and emergency services of severe or hazardous weather which can cause damage, widespread disruption or danger to life.

A “yellow” warning means you should plan ahead thinking about travel delays and that people should keep an eye on the latest forecast and be aware that weather may change or worsen.

Western Power Distribution have also issued a warning for customers to prepare for power cuts.
