Newport-based structural engineering firm Cintec International's sister company in North America has successfully helped restore on of the tallest buildings in Toronto, Canada.

Having worked on various other projects around North America including the Statue of Liberty, the Library of Parliament in Canada, the White House, the firm used its patented anchoring system to restore the famous landmark Simpson Tower, which is one of the top 50 tallest buildings in Toronto.

In the early 50s common construction practice was to produce steel-framed buildings with masonry panel cladding. These infrastructures are showing signs of age and construction defects such as corrosion to reinforcing bars and panel ties which have resulted in buildings becoming unsightly to occupants and an ever increasing liability to their owners.

WSP Canada Inc, which were the structural and facade engineering consultant for the over-cladding of the Simpson Tower, contacted Cintec to help on the restoration project.

The 35-storey building needed to be strengthened, so Cintec used its anchoring system, which is 50 per cent stronger than those previously used, to ensure the longevity of the building. Cintec’s Anchoring System is installed by a steel bar being carefully enclosed in a mesh fabric sleeve into which a specially developed grout is then injected under low pressure.

Through the use of such innovative technology Cintec was able to complete the project without having to remove and inconvenience tenants.

Robert Lloyd-Rees, CEO of Cintec North America, said: “The Simpson Tower is just one example of the many projects we have undertaken over the last decade, restoring some of North America’s most iconic buildings using Cintec’s extremely successful patented anchoring system.”

Peter James, chairman of Cintec International, said: “Robert and his team’s recent completion of the iconic Simpson Tower in Toronto is a perfect illustration of how we tailor make solutions to structural problems in high-rise buildings, as well as some of the world’s oldest and iconic archaeological monuments.”

Cintec has also worked on projects around the world including the Egyptian Pyramids, Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace.
