TWENTY years ago I was not even born, but twenty years on from the devolution referendum I cannot say how much of a mistake Wales made. Devolution in Wales has been to put it bluntly, a failure.

Back in 1997, the average earning of a Welsh worker was higher than several of the English regions. Now the only region where we beat in average earnings is the East Midlands.

While waiting times in our hospitals rise and we continue to lag at the bottom of the PISA league tables in education in the UK, the Welsh Assembly has spent millions on an airport and sold public land 75% below the market price.

The Welsh Assembly is also planning expansion, not of education or the NHS, but of how many AMs we have. They want 20 more AMs, costing around £60,000 each. They will soon have powers over our taxes too, without popular consent via a referendum, unlike in Scotland.

I have been told many times that the Welsh Assembly is here to stay, but one thing I firmly believe is that nothing is inevitable in politics. It was said we would never leave the EU, look what happened there.
