A WOMAN from Blackwood has praised her husband and his friends for taking part in a 54-mile walk for Tenovus Cancer Care.

Karen Darknell was diagnosed with breast cancer in January this year and after having a lumpectomy has just finished her battle with the disease.

Mrs Darknell’s husband Stephen, 40, tackled the walk from Brecon to Cardiff Bay with three of his friends to raise £1,000 to help buy Tenovus Cancer Care another mobile unit - as Mrs Darknell received treatment in one of the units.

After trekking for 20 hours 20 minutes, the men have so far raised more than £1,000.

The 47-year-old praised her husband and her six-year-old son Jaxon’s support during her illness.

She said: “He has been my rock through all of this. If I didn’t have Steve and Jaxon it would have been more of a struggle.

“He cared for me everyday for five months to which he had a breakdown himself as he couldn’t accept it. But it has made the both of us stronger and the bond we have is stronger than ever.

“ I love my boys so much and for him to show his love and support by walking 20hrs and 20mins was incredible.

“He truly is amazing and hope the money raised will help the next person who faces the dreaded disease.”

Tenovus Cancer Care’s mobile units travel around Wales to various community venues and aim to bring treatment for cancer to people so they don’t have to visit hospitals. The charity has two units; one specialising in chemotherapy and the other, a Mobile Lymphoedema Clinic, which Tenovus Cancer Care states are the “first in the world”.

Praising the mobile units, Mrs Darknell, said: “I had my first chemo on the bus and it was amazing.

“It helps people to get the same care as if they were going to the hospital and reduces stress as its nearer to home. The care and support I have had from the beginning has been amazing.”
