A MOTHER who “feared the worst” when she discovered her 10-year-old son badly injured and unconscious has thanked the public for “helping him”.

Kelly Phillips, who lives on Brain Street, Newport, said she “froze” when she was told that her son had been in an accident earlier this month.

“My son, Dexter, had been out playing with his friends on his bike on Sunday, September 10,” said Miss Phillips.

“He was on his way home when he decided to go down the hill at Ringland Shopping Centre but he lost control of the bike. He ended up skidding all the way down the hill on his face and ended up at the bottom.

“One of his friends then came to tell me what had happened and I just froze.”

The mother-of-three rushed to her son but said she didn’t know “what to think” when she discovered him unconscious and badly-bruised lying on the floor.

She said: “When I got there there were a lot of people crowding around someone lying on the ground.

“I went into panic when I saw the injuries. I was convinced that he had broken his nose but his face was covered in bruises and blood.

“He was still unconscious by the time I got there but minutes later he regained consciousness.

“He couldn’t remember anything and when looking at those injuries I did think the worst.”

But Miss Phillips, who works at Ringland shops, said her "heart lifted" when she heard members of the public had aided her hurt son.

"They had wrapped him in coats to keep him warm," said Miss Phillips.

"They had also told me that they had called an ambulance.

"We hear a lot of bad news at the moment but this is a good news. Something much worse could have happened to Dexter but thankfully it didn't."

She added: "My heart lifted when I found out about the kind acts. I'd like to say a big thank you to those people who helped Dexter near the shops."

Son Dexter Kershaw also offered his thanks.

"Thank you for helping me," said Dexter. "I can't remember what happened but thank you."

The mother of Dexter said she also wanted to thank staff at the Royal Gwent Hospital for the care given to her son.

She said: "When Dexter arrived he was taken into resuscitation. After being care for he was released the following day.

"I'd like to say thanks again and Dexter should be back to his normal self very soon."
