A COMMUNITY group have launched an appeal to help fund a free community fireworks show later this year.

The newly-formed Trevethin Matters group have had fundraising successes in the past with their first family fun day this year topping £1,400.

Their new plans include a event incorporating Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night with a hog roast, refreshments, raffles, competitions and more.

So far, the group have raised £2,019 through community events and gardening but are aiming for a figure of £3,500.

To help push through the final hurdle, the group have set up a ‘JustGiving’ fundraising page and are encouraging people give their support.

Cllr Louise Shepphard, of Trevethin ward, said the community group aims to provide the event for free to help support struggling families.

“Trevethin is high on the deprivation list and many are using food banks in our area and sometimes these events are not something they would have money to spend out on,” she said.

“We want to make things more accessible to the community that they wouldn’t be able to afford ordinarily.

“Some families don’t leave our community and it is great for them to be able to experience these things.”

Recent events held by the group included a coach to Barry island and an upcoming trip to Weston carnival.

Many of these events have been partly-funded by the group carrying out voluntary maintenance jobs and cutting peoples’ gardens.

Cllr Shepphard added that businesses in the area have also supported the community group from accepting donation boxes to Michael Gulliford from Glenview Stores and the newsagents donating a Pimms hamper for the raffle and Townsend butchers providing a hog roast.

The councillor added that the group are also negotiating with the lease holders of Cold Barn Farm community centre to use the premises for future activities.

“We have many ideas such as healthy eating courses, homework club, coffee evenings, finance help and advice,” she said.
