NEWS the UK could follow Wales' example and introduce an opt-out organ donation system has been welcomed by a Newport MP.
Wales was the first country in the UK to introduce an opt-in organ donation system, through which people are assumed to have consented for their organs to be used for transplant when they die unless they specifically opt out, in December 2015.
And earlier this week Theresa May announced a consultation would be launched on introducing the system in England.
Newport West MP Paul Flynn, who has repeatedly called for the UK Government to follow Wales' example on organ donation, welcomed the news.
"Unlike in Wales, thousands in England wait for transplants," he said.
"In many cases organs become available too late, or not at all, leading to the unnecessary loss of life.
"It is known that 39 lives were saved by the law in Wales, whilst 400 lives were lost in England due to its absence."
