A MINUTE’S silence was held at the start of the first ever Pillgwenlly Community Football Shield tournament in memory of PC Steve Jenkins.

Cllr Tracey Holyoake said: “At the start of the games, we held a minute silence in honour of Steve Jenkins, where the Pill police force turned up to show their dedication and professionalism.

“It was a special moment for us to tell them that we will support them every way we can in the coming months and years.”

Cllr Ibrahim Hayat said: “As far as Steve is concerned, he was a wonderful officer, a wonderful friend of our community and a lovely person.

“We all loved him dearly.”

Jayne Bryant AM added: “The police were very touched by the crowds coming up to them to pass on their condolences and that is an example of the community spirit on display in Pill.”

The tournament was held as a fundraiser for St Michael’s RC Primary School, and eight teams took to the field competing for the shield.

Communities First won the shield, beating Docks Con 2 5-4 on penalties.
