COUNCILS across Wales will learn how much funding they will be handed by the Welsh Government in the coming financial year later today.
The Welsh Government is due to announce its draft local government settlement this afternoon, revealing how much cash each council will be handed for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.
Although all local authorities in Gwent saw their funding cut by between 0.1 and 0.5 per cent last year, this drop was not as significant as some had feared.
And, under the Welsh Government’s draft budget announced last week, council budgets will fall by between 1.5 and two per cent after inflation in April.
As a result some council bosses have warned swingeing cuts to services and significant council tax rises may be necessary this year.
Speaking to the BBC last week Newport City Council and Welsh Local Government Association leader Cllr Debbie Wilcox said she “can’t see how else” authorities could deal with the funding cuts.
The funding settlement is due to be revealed at about 3pm this afternoon. Full details will be on the Argus website as soon as we have them.
