For our Dog of the Week we would like to introduce you to the ‘pointies’, an affectionate term for greyhounds, sighthounds and lurchers.

Suki, a Saluki, Tia, a brindle and white lurcher, and Albie tall dark and handsome greyhound mix would like to tell you a little about what wonderful pets pointies can be.

Contrary to popular belief pointy-faced dogs do not need endless hours of exercise! If you enjoy climbing mountains, trekking through the woods, or hiking holidays these dogs are not for you! They are sprinters not marathon runners, and although they love to kick up their heels for 10 minute zoomies in a wide open space, for the rest of the day they are generally relaxed couch potatoes. They are a dream on lead, light as a feather and like to walk slowly and close to your side. For older households especially they can be the perfect pet, as they like to have their meals and water from a high-feeder, so you don’t need to bend down to pick up their bowls, and they won’t be dancing around your ankles so no danger of tripping over them!

Generally speaking they are relaxed and happy in the company of other dogs, and Tia and Suki love stepping out together when they go for their walks. Due to their breed instincts though they sometimes find kitties and small furries too ‘interesting’ so as a rule it’s not a good idea to rehome pointies with cats, rabbits, hamsters etc.

If you have never had the pleasure of the company of a pointy-faced dog, pop down to Newport City Dogs Home for some myth-busting cuddles with Suki, Tia and Albie.
