THE second Monmouthshire Food Festival of the year was bigger and better than ever this weekend.

The popular event at Caldicot Castle, now in its third year, saw demonstrations by award-winning chefs and stalls by food and drink producers from across Wales and further afield.

Organiser Charlotte Greig said 55 producers had taken part in the weekend event, up about 20 per cent from the event earlier this year.

“We’re beginning to make a name for ourselves,” she said.

“Producers talk to each other and tell each other what events are good to go to.

“We probably have to turn away more producers than we accept because we don’t want to have too many of the same thing.”

She added she hoped the event helped promote Monmouthshire as a place to visit.

“People come over the bridge and drive straight through without stopping.

“But there’s so much here and we want more people to visit.”

Among the exhibitors were Clive Williams, head chef of the Parkway Hotel in Cwmbran and holder of 2AA Rosettes, and development chef Liam Whittle.

Demonstrations were also hosted by Christos Kyriakidis of The Pod Cocktail Bar and Restaurant, opening soon in Newport, and others.

Also exhibiting was Non Rhys of Cardiff-based syrup producer Tast Natur, who was attending the festival for the first time.

“It’s going really well,” she said.

“Lots of people are already looking for things for Christmas.”

Charity Guide Dogs was also on hand telling people about the work of the charity.

Volunteer and guide dog user Sian Healey said: “We’ve had lots of children coming past and asking about the dogs, as well as people asking how they can help.

“I’ve been explaining about the job guide dogs do.

“But the charity doesn’t just provide dogs, it provides sited guides too.”
