PEOPLE packed out Tredegar Park this weekend in celebration of the German folk festival Oktoberfest.

The event saw thousands of people don their best alpine hats, lederhosen and dirndls before heading to the festival - which was set up inside a large white tent.

As well as bringing in the beer, Oktoberfest Newport brought in a Bavarian selection of food and entertainment.

The festival took place inside one of Europe’s largest touring bier tents across three sessions on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening.

The famous Oompah bands played throughout the festival and along with the bar there were a wide variety of German foods available from several food stands.

David Jones, 30, and his friend Jason James, 29, said they decided to come to Oktoberfest with a group of their friends to see what the event was like.

Mr Jones said: "We've never actually been to any sort of Oktoberfest event before so thought we'd come down with a group of mates.

"It's a great atmosphere here and there's everything you need - friends, beer and food."

The adult-only event, run in conjunction with Newport City Council, is held annually in Germany from mid or late September, to the first weekend in October.

In the 16-day German event, fans descend to a Beerhall Tent to enjoy music, games, entertainment, food, and singing.
