Players observed the moment of silence for Thomas Rowe, from the Bassaleg area of Newport, before playing Colchester United.
Bassaleg school have also paid a tribute to their pupil. A spokeswoman for the school said: “We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy and have offered our condolences and sympathy to the family.
“We have spoken to pupils and staff about what has happened and, with the help of the council, have arrangements in place to support all those affected.”
An inquest into the death of the 15-year-old opened last Thursday.
The inquest heard his body was found at an address in Farrier’s Gate on Saturday, October 7, and that a post mortem examination found the provisional cause of death to be asphyxia and hanging.
Senior coroner for Gwent David Bowen adjourned the inquest for two months, to enable inquiries to be completed.
