BRITAIN walking away from Brexit talks without a deal would "cause chaos" and should not be an option, according to Carwyn Jones.

The first minister is urging the Government to stop "careless talk" and to get "serious" negotiations with the European Union back on track.

He has also called for warnings made by trade organisations across Europe to be heeded or risk damaging the UK's economy and future security.

Mr Jones has referenced the findings of the British Medical Association (BMA), who say that cancer diagnoses and operations could be delayed.

Another example is given by the British Retail Consortium, who claim that reverting to WTO tariffs may lead to UK shoppers spending up to a third more on everyday items.

Mr Jones is set to speak at the Senedd later today and will call for Britain's negotiators to put the "unthinkable" idea of not getting a deal out of their minds.

His statement reads: "The UK Government and the gung-ho Brexiteers must wise up and listen to what the experts are saying.

"It would be impossible to mitigate the effects of such a disastrous conclusion to the Brexit negotiations.

“Preventing this outcome, not preparing contingency plans, is what we must focus on.

"To do otherwise would be like a passenger on the Titanic who, upon seeing an iceberg, chooses to find his lifejacket and pack his things, rather than rushing to the bridge and desperately attempting to alert the captain of the disaster ahead.

He added: “The UK Government must concentrate on reaching a credible position on our exit terms so that the December European Council can move negotiations into the second phase and very rapidly thereafter agree a transition phase of at least two years.”
