ANGRY residents have hit out at "disgusting" and "unacceptable" fly-tipping on a slip-road in Bassaleg.

Fly-tippers have dumped building material on Pentrepoeth Road, Bassaleg over the weekend.

Newport resident Sian Davies said "I think it's disgusting," adding: "You can see buckets, wall paper and others bits on the big pile.

"I hope the culprits get caught."

Councillor David Williams, who represents the Graig ward, added: "It's been here since Saturday.

"This behaviour is unacceptable. This area is a lovely place to live and it's a shame that people are damaging the area."

Councillor Roger Jeavons, cabinet member for Streetscene, said the incident will be investigated and could result in a prosecution.

“It is a shame some people have no regard for the environment and do not take responsibility for disposing of waste in the proper manner and instead illegally dump rubbish in this way," said Cllr Jeavons.

“Fly tipping is a scourge on society and it results in the council having to spend thousands of pounds a year dealing with such incidents when this money could be used to benefit our communities.

“I would appeal to residents to either report incidents on the council website or phone the Pride in Newport fly tipping hotline where information can be left in confidence."

The Pride in Newport hotline number is 07973698582.
