MORE than 270 calls were received by the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service on Bonfire Night – one of the busiest nights of the year for the emergency service.

The service’s fire control centre, which covers 10 local authority areas in south Wales – including Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen – were inundated with calls in a period of around four-and-a-half hours on Sunday, November 5 alone, according to an SWFRS spokeswoman.

Although not solely refined to the Gwent region, incidents included fires near shops, vehicles set alight, refuse fires and trees and hedges ‘deliberately’ set ablaze.

At just before 4.40pm, fire crews from Brynmawr and Blaenavon were called to a bedroom fire in Nantyglo, with one person treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Meanwhile in Magor, a crew from Maindee dealt with a bonfire which was deemed to be close to a petrol station and a village hall.

A number of old trucks were set alight in a field near Ebbw Vale, with a crew from the Blaenau Gwent town attending at just before 4.50pm.

Petrol was poured on a bonfire by a group of children in Pontllanfraith at around 6.05pm, and youths were reportedly lighting fires at the British in Talywain at around 8.35pm, according to a SWFRS spokeswoman.

A Caldicot crew put out a number of bay light that were alight in a field in St Brides Netherwent at just after 8.20pm.

The crew from Brynmawr put out a vehicle fire on Coronation Street in Blaina at just after 8.40pm and a football stand in Malpas was set alight at around 8.45pm, with a Malpas crew attending.

Fire crews were equally busy on Saturday, November 4.

Meanwhile a crew responded to a report of trees ‘deliberately’ set on fire in Forgeside, Blaenavon, at around 5.50pm.

Hedges were reportedly ‘deliberately’ set on fire in Roseheyworth, Abertillery, at 7.25pm, at the same time as a separate fire in Llantarnam, Cwmbran.

Reports of youths throwing petrol on a large bonfire in Waunlwyd, Ebbw Vale, were responded to at 8.15pm.

Refuse was set on fire near the railway station in High Cross, Newport, at around 8.55pm.
