THREE teenagers were seen “tormenting” and “playing cat and mouse” with a Polish man, who was later found unresponsive in Newport’s Keene Street, a court has heard.

Callum Banton and Brandon Crosdale, both 18, and Shaquille Crosdale, 19, all of Fleetwood Close, have pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of 41-year-old Jan Jedrzejewski.

Louise Fielding, a resident of Keene Street at the time of the incident, appeared before Newport Crown Court on Wednesday, November 8 to give evidence.

Mr Jedrzejewski died at the Royal Gwent Hospital the day after the alleged incident, as he was found unresponsive at around 11pm close to Cromwell Road on Thursday, January 12.

Answering questions from prosecutor William Hughes QC, Miss Fielding said she saw one of the teenagers approach Mr Jedrzejewski between parked cars.

“I saw Callum Banton creeping up behind the cars on the left hand side,” she said.

“I saw Callum Banton go in with the first blow on the Polish man.

“He punched him in the back of the head.

“The two other boys were stood on the other side of the road.

“He came up behind the row of cars and hit him from behind.

“The Polish man turned around to see who had hit him and he turned towards the two boys.

“Shaquille said “What the f*** man?” I then saw him hit him with a piece of wood.”

Miss Fielding added she saw Brandon Crosdale deliver a “karate kick” to Mr Jedrzejewski but she could not tell if it connected.

Defending Banton, Ali Bajwa QC asked Miss Fielding about how Mr Jedrzejewski’s interaction with the three defendants.

“The Polish man was being was being aggressive to the three boys,” said Mr Bajwa, “He was being aggresive to them.”

Miss Fielding replied: “No, he was being tormented by those three boys.

“Those boys were playing cat and mouse with him.”

Mr Bajwa also asked Miss Fielding about the contact made by Banton towards Mr Jedrzejewski and whether it was a flick or a tap, based on her descriptions from her police interview.
