ARMED police were called to Friars Walk, in Newport, yesterday evening to search for an "unknown weapon".
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: "At approximately 6:20pm on Wednesday, November 8, we received reports of disorder in High Street, Newport.
"During the incident, an altercation is believed to have taken place with an unknown weapon and a male was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"Officers conducted a search of the area to locate those involved and to ensure there was no further threat to the public."
The spokeswoman said there were wider searches, including the Friars Walk area, and that armed officers attended as a safety precaution.
"The weapon is unknown at this time as it hasn’t been recovered but enquires are ongoing," she said. "At this time enquiries are going to establish the events around this incident and anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting log 390 08/11/17."
