A TALENTED baker from Cwmbran has yet again scooped several awards at a industry competition for his film-inspired creations.

Paul Williams, of Llantarnam Road, has been in the cake business for over 30 years and currently trades in Cwmbran as managing director of Happy Occasions Cakes Ltd.

When attending the ‘Cake International’ expo at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre earlier this month the baker wowed both crowds and judges with his unique take on several iconic film characters.

This ranged from a a silver-winning Harry Potter piece showing a hippogriff leaping out of water and detailed silver-wining Lord of the Rings-inspired miniature, to a monstrous model based on a scene from science fiction film, The Thing (1982).

In terms of price, the cakes range from £150 - £200

The 50-year-old baker was also part of the ‘Welsh Cakes’ team that were crowned ‘cake-off’ champions after decorating a three-tier cake in front of a live audience against the clock.

The team included team members from the Polka Dot Teapot in Llantrisant and Dragon and Daffodils Cake in Pontypridd.

“That’s why I do this,” the baker said, “It’s about pushing yourself and learning new skills in the process”.

A team of four, including Mr Williams, also created a six foot high ‘Steampunk Garden’ showstopper which was so large, it had to be left at the expo.

The baker, describing his process, said cakes are often inspired by his favourite movies and while difficult to transport, can often lead to repeat custom orders from customers in Wales.

While every cake was created from vanilla sponge, butter cream and ganache, exhibition pieces are often over baked so they can be put on display at the business’s Cwmbran showroom.

But the process of bring an idea to fully-baked reality is often a steep learning curve every time, he added.
