A MAN who was attacked by burglars feels “no justice is being done” after police have told him they won’t carry on the investigation.

Gwent Police have said that enquiries were undertaken and that the case was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), who decided not to bring charges.

The CPS have said they are reviewing their decision.

Adam Gauntlett said he was attacked by intruders at around 6am on May 15 this year and is still living in fear.

The 24-year-old said that, at the time, he was sleeping when he heard shouting.

Mr Gauntlett, of Osborne Road, in Pontypool, said: “I got up to look out of my window and there were two men and a woman shouting.

“The next thing I heard the door was being kicked, so I ran into my kitchen to grab something to protect myself.

“But, the guy had already gone into the house, throwing me from one side to the kitchen to the other.”

Mr Gauntlett said the man then started punching him.

“He must have punched me about eight times,” he added. “He was punching me on my face and my head.

“There was blood everywhere.”

Mr Gauntlett said the attack lasted about five to ten minutes.

He said: “It was so out of the blue.

“They didn’t steal anything, but the kitchen radiator and the door were broken. I have put another lock on my door because I am worried.”

Mr Gauntlett said that, after the attack, he had more than 26 stitches to his lip, which was split in three places.

He had bruising on his eyes for more than a week and a half and his jaw felt sore, he added.

Mr Gauntlett will also need dental treatment as three of his teeth have loosened up, at a cost of £700.

He said: “I am still shaken up because nothing has been done about it. It is quite scary as I am still living in the same flat and I worry they may come back.”

Mr Gauntlett said police told him last week they would not investigate the matter further because they didn’t have enough evidence.

He said: “I feel like I am being let down and that no justice is being done.”

Mr Gauntlett said he is currently appealing the decision to the CPS.

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said that enquiries were undertaken and a man was arrested on suspicion of burglary with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

She said: "He was released under investigation. The case was referred to the CPS and the CPS has decided not to bring charges.

"The victim has been advised of the outcome and given advice and details of the CPS right to review scheme.”

A CPS spokeswoman said they have received a request to review their decision not to authorise charges following an allegation of assault in May 2017.

She said the review is ongoing.
