A NEWPORT activist is "extremely worried" after bins were set on fire for the second time in a month in the Old Barn Estate, in the St Julians area of Newport.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said a fire engine from Maindee attended to a rubbish fire at the Old Barn Estate on Friday at 4.31pm.

Bins were also set alight by fireworks in Buttermere Way, in the Old Barn estate, on Hallowe'en.

Local campaigner Michael Enea said:"At about 5pm on Friday, I looked out of my window to see the communal bins - next to a block of flats - on fire with smoke billowing up into the sky. I immediately dialled 999.

"This is the second fire to communal bins in the space of a month. The last one occurred in the middle of the night near a house occupied with three children."

Mr Enea said this is "extremely worrying" and said he would speaking with the police.
