STAFF at schools across Gwent will be praised for their hard work by politicians and head teachers today.

Stars in our Schools look to celebrate “unsung” heroes such as teaching assistants, caterers and cleaners and recognise them as being a part of the education team.

UNISON, the largest trade union for school support staff in Wales, will be delivering hundreds of cakes and goody bags to schools across Wales.

Schools will also hold award ceremonies, assemblies or holding a coffee morning to thank staff for their commitment over the last year.

Among those taking part in Newport are Maes Ebbw Special School, St Joseph’s High School, Caerleon Comprehensive, Llanwern High School, Charles Williams Primary, Gaer Primary and Ringland Primary.

In Monmouthshire Magor Primary and Caldicot School will take part along with Nant Celyn Primary, West Mon Comprehensive St Albans Comprehensive, Blaenavon Primary and Crownbridge School in Torfaen.

Jess Turner, lead organiser for schools at UNISON Wales, said: “UNISON’s Stars in our Schools day shines a light on the wonderful work of all school support staff.

“We are very pleased politicians and head teachers want to champion the positive role of the whole school staff team in making schools welcoming and effective places for students to learn. UNISON is dedicated to campaigning for decent terms and conditions for all school staff.”
