PEOPLE braved the heavy rain to queue up for some free chicken this morning.

The newly opened KFC in Friars Walk in Newport had an official launch event where the first hundred people to arrive at the store got a free £5 voucher for food and a free T-shirt.

Tony Jones from Rogerstone said he joined the queue so he could get the free T-shirt.

He said: "I used to work in the Wimpy in Newport and I have a nice collection of Wimpy T-shirts so I want a KFC one to complement them.

"I don't mind the wait in the rain as I am a KFC fan. My daughter who also loves KFC is in school today so she can't make it."

Restaurant manager Clare Morris has been working for KFC for six years. She said that the majority of staff in the new outlet live locally.

She said: "This is the first restaurant that I have run on my own and I am so excited about it.

"It's great that so many people are coming and enjoying the food. The rain did put off some people, but most have still come out with a smile."
