NEWPORT County AFC captain Joss Labadie has revealed that he’s already discussed the possibility of signing a new contract to stay at Rodney Parade.

Labadie leads the team at Cambridge United on Saturday looking for a repeat of his two-goal salvo that sealed victory against the same opponents in the FA Cup on December 3.

After that match manager Michael Flynn was full of praise for his skipper and expressed his fear that bigger clubs could make a move for the midfielder.

Flynn said: “I thought he was outstanding, and I’ve told him about the timing of his runs into the box.

“If he does that he’s going to keep adding goals to his game and I don’t think we’ll keep hold of him for much longer.”

Labadie, who has five goals in 19 appearances so far this season, signed a two-year contract when he was brought to the club by former manager Warren Feeney in June 2016.

His current deal runs out next summer but the 27-year-old former Dagenham & Redbridge man says he would be keen to stay in Newport for longer.

“We’ve had initial discussions but nothing is set in stone just yet,” said Labadie.

“I’m happy, I’m enjoying my time here and that’s all that matters at the moment.

“I’m looking to get Newport into the play-offs and out of this league so that’s my main focus.

“I love Newport, I love the players, love the staff, love the fans so I’m happy here right now and my sole focus is on getting promotion.”

County are currently 12th in the League Two table – two points ahead of Cambridge in 13h and one point below Coventry City in seventh.

And Labadie is convinced that the Exiles can maintain their play-off push in the second half of the season.

“The morale is really good in the squad,” he said. “All the boys are happy and looking forward to the festive period.

“We’ve not done anything yet – it’s only half way through the season – but it is nice to be looking up rather than down.

“And there’s no reason why we can’t target the play-offs.”

Calaum Jahraldo-Martin and Marlon Jackson are still out with hamstring injuries.

But Ben Tozer is fit to return after missing last week’s match due to illness.

And Scot Bennett is also in contention after recovering from a hip problem.
