THE UK Government has vowed to secure a final deal on Brexit that "works for all parts of the country".

The promise came after a Welsh Government report said Wales must not lose funding or powers once the UK leaves the European Union.

Responding to the report, a Wales Office spokesman said: "We have always said that we will negotiate our EU exit for every nation and region of the United Kingdom.

"Our goal is to secure a deal that works for all parts of the country."

He added Brexit presented "an opportunity to reconsider how funding for growth across the UK is designed and delivered", calling EU programmes "expensive to administer and poorly targeted".

"Implementing a copycat scheme is simply not an option, so this UK Government will determine an innovative way of funding the communities in Wales that need it most," he said.

“This government’s manifesto and the secretary of state for Wales’ committed to creating a UK Shared Prosperity Fund and work is ongoing to consider how best this can be achieved.

"As per our commitment, we will of course consult stakeholders including the Welsh Government at the earliest opportunity.”
