RAIL services between Newport and Cardiff returned to normal following yesterday's disruption.

According to National Rail, repairs continued throughout the night and trains are running normally following a disruption caused by theft of signalling cables between these stations.

Rail passengers faced major travel disruption yesterday because of a signalling fault and Arriva Trains Wales advised customers not to travel between Newport and Cardiff.

The company ran a "very limited" replacement bus service between the two stations, while passengers were able to use their tickets on some Cardiff, Newport, Cwmbran and Ebbw Vale bus services.

Newport Bus also accepted tickets valid for travel between Newport and Cardiff on their buses until 10pm.

Their routes between Gloucester, Manchester Piccadilly, Holyhead and Pembroke Dock, Fishguard Harbour, Maesteg, Milford Haven, were also affected.

Great Western Railway services between London Paddington, Portsmouth Harbour, Taunton and Cardiff Central, Swansea, were also disrupted, along with CrossCountry services between Nottingham and Cardiff Central.
